Cooking Up Confidence with General Merchants

2nd Apr 2026

We would like to extend thanks to General Merchants on Antrim Road for giving our finalist pupils such a wonderful and memorable experience as part of their Brennans Bread recipe competition. The pupils had to create a recipe to reuse stale bread, rather than throwing it out. They created a healthy toastie and their recipe was selected as a finalist entry to take part in the Brennans Bread cook off competition.

The café generously welcomed our finalist pupils into their premises and offered their time and expertise. They offered an inspiring behind the scenes look at how they create their famous toasties. Pupils were warmly welcomed into their café and brought into the kitchen, introduced to the chefs, and given an excellent explanation of the health and safety procedures that professionals follow. Together, we explored ingredients, flavour combinations and creative toastie ideas to inspire their final recipe that they were hoping to recreate.

Then the real fun began! The chefs demonstrated how to make the perfect toastie, sharing expert tips, tricks, and some special General Merchants secrets for achieving the best toastie in Belfast.

Afterwards, we enjoyed delicious hot chocolate and taste tested three different toasties, deciding which one they would like to recreate for the competition. The café also kindly gifted each child a badge to celebrate their fantastic effort.

Although the final cook off competition had to be cancelled due to the storm and exceptional closure, the enthusiasm, kindness and encouragement shown by the General Merchants team truly inspired our young chefs and made the experience incredibly worthwhile.

To celebrate their hard work, 6JS will now enjoy a free trip to W5, where they will also be presented with their finalist award.

Thank you, General Merchants, for supporting our pupils and for being such a fantastic local partner. Your generosity and kindness made a lasting impact on our school community.
